Understanding Your Dandruff
Dandruff arises from an imbalanced and unhealthy scalp microbiome, typically caused by an overgrowth of the malassezia yeast microbe. This microbe thrives on the natural oils (sebum) produced by sebaceous glands, which are located under the skin, attached to
hair follicles, and work with sweat glands at the surface.
Sebum is a natural, healthy oil that acts as a skin barrier (acid mantle), moisturising and protecting the scalp. However, when sebum production is excessive, it becomes a food source for malassezia yeast and can combine with sweat, dead skin cells, and environmental debris, leading to scalp buildup. This overgrowth leads to an imbalance in the scalp microbiome, known as dysbiosis, causing oily dead skin cells to lift off the scalp and often exacerbated by scratching or brushing, resulting in flakes on the scalp and in the hair, which is visible dandruff.
